I make a variation of this berry banana smoothie several times a week, although not always for breakfast. It’s the perfect way to start the day; quick and easy to make, full of healthy ingredients, and bursting with fresh flavor.

The “recipe” is endlessly flexible and adaptable. While the banana and milk (and usually yogurt) are relative constants, the rest of the fruit and add-ins vary by season and what we happen to have on hand that morning.

At the moment it’s any number of different berries and fresh peaches, but depending on the season, I’ll swap in mangoes, sweet potatoes, figs, dates, spinach, kale… the list goes on.

I also like to add a few scoops of a number of nutritional powerhouses: chia and flax seeds for extra fiber and an amino acid boost, and collagen powder or almond butter for extra protein.

You know it’s nearly impossible for me to pass up summer berries at the market, so today it was luscious blackberries added to the creamy yogurt, banana and milk.

But the lovely thing is, frozen fruit is actually best in this berry banana smoothie, as it keeps things super cold and creamy, so you can take advantage of your favorite berries year round. A drizzle of honey or maple syrup adds a touch of sweetness to round out a delicious way to wake up.

Description

A healthy berry banana smoothie packed with frozen berries, banana, and creamy yogurt, that can be easily customized to your favorite ingredients. Start with this base recipe then make it dairy free, a green smoothie, or add chia seeds, flax oil, or collagen for a nutritional boost!

Ingredients

Scale

8 oz plain or vanilla Greek yogurt¹

1 frozen banana,² broken into chunks

1 cup berries (blueberries, blackberries, strawberries)

1 cup milk of choice³

Optional add-ins: 2-3 tsp honey or maple syrup or 1 pitted Medjool date, 1 Tbsp collagen powder, 1 Tbsp chia seeds, 1 Tbsp flax seeds, 1 Tbsp almond or peanut butter, handful of spinach or kale leaves.

Instructions

Place all ingredients in a high-speed blender and blend until smooth and creamy, about a minute or two.

Pour into glasses. Best enjoyed immediately.

Notes

¹ Go dairy free with coconut/almond/or cashew milk yogurt, such as those from So Delicious or Forager.

² I usually freeze chunks of banana to have on hand for smoothies. Frozen banana creates a thicker and colder smoothie, in lieu of using ice cubes, which can dilute the flavor. If you don’t like banana, frozen mango and cauliflower will also add creaminess.

³ I usually opt for unsweetened almond milk, coconut milk, or flax milk, but any dairy or non-dairy milk will work!
